Doodling Fun

I’ve always loved to color. Yes, even as an adult you’d catch me sneaking my kids brand new crayons and a color book. I even had a coworker that shared my childish love. We’d often spend our lunch breaks coloring on the patio in the sunshine. Since I have boys though the coloring books in my house are full of Power Rangers, Sponge Bob and Star Wars. Not exactly my favorite things. So guess what I’ve been up to…making my own designs to color.

There is a new fad called Zentangle. It’s a form of mind yoga that is supposed to help you relax and focus your thinking. I’ve been using some Zentangle patterns and images as inspiration for my own pieces. (You can see my Zentangle pins on Pinterest here.) Below are a few things that I’ve done so far. I’ll admit it is very therapeutic and helps me calm my mind and relax.

Monster Truck Monday! Win Tickets to see Monster Jam in Pittsburgh!

This Winter has been harsh in the Burgh and if your kids are anything like my boys, cabin fever is getting the best of them. To be honest, it’s gotten the best of me too! Thankfully there are some great events coming soon to CONSOL Energy Center.

Monster Jam is coming to CONSOL Energy Center February 14-16 and tickets are affordably priced for the whole family with seats starting at just $12 for kids and $25 for adults.

IronMan12_02 (2)

The event will feature the first appearance in Pittsburgh of Iron Man™, the rugged crusher inspired by the Iron Man 2 movie. After a triumphant premiere in Pittsburgh last year, this year’s show will also see the return of Zombie, along with fan favorite Monster Jam® trucks, including Grave Digger, Monster Mutt, Razin’ Kane, Ice Cream Man, Illuminator, and Instigator. (Trucks subject to change without notice.)

Approximately 12 feet tall and about 12 feet wide, Monster Jam trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, Monster Jam trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster Jam trucks can fly up to125 to 130 feet (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 35 feet in the air.

The Party in the Pits on Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day gives fans the opportunity to get onto the actual racetrack to collect the drivers’ autographs, take photos, and explore the obstacles they’ll jump over and eventually destroy. Pit passes are available for ticket holders of the 2 p.m. shows for an additional $10.

This year Monster Jam is doing something really cool! Get tickets for the Thursday, February 13 event and you can attend the FREE, family-friendly party, from 6-8pm to celebrate the Pittsburgh debut of the Iron Man truck. The party will be superhero-themed and will include games, a photo booth, arts & crafts, face-painting, and a chance to go down to the track for a sneak peek at the truck and to meet the driver, Lee O'Donnell. Can you imagine your kiddos face when they get to see the Iron Man truck up close and personal?!

Things aren’t always what they seem…

It seems so much this world is about smoke and mirrors…what you see isn’t always truth. It’s so easy to make it look like things are amazing and you have the best life ever on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It’s also just as easy to make it sound like you have the worst life in hopes to get attention and sympathy.  It’s so hard to tell who is real and who isn’t…that right there is a shame.

Then there is real life. You walk around seeing smiling faces but you never truly know what’s behind that smile. You see a family dressed in torn dirty clothes walking through Walmart and you immediately cast judgment on them wondering why they’d go out dressed like that. There’s too much judgment. I will admit that I’m guilty of this myself but I’m trying hard to stop when my mind goes down those tracks. I want to reprogram my thinking process. Here’s what I try to remind myself when these situations come up:

Someone is rude to you…Maybe they lost their job that week? Maybe their spouse left them or they are dealing with a hard struggle. Say a prayer for them before you think hateful thoughts. Maybe they need a smile or kind word. Who knows what hardships they’ve experienced.

You see a child misbehaving in the store or doctors office while their parent sits by and seems to do nothing…Maybe they are struggling with behavior issues and this child’s parent is worn and exhausted. At the point of giving up. Pray for that child…pray for that parent. Ask God to give them peace, strength and guidance.

You see someone who is chronically ill and they are happy and smiling…Remember they are strong and have learned to put up a good front. Inside they are still struggling. They are still fighting. Pray for their health. Pray for their mental well being. Offer them a meal or find a way to be a blessing to them even if all seems well. So often these people will never ask for help but inside they are crying out for some one to care enough to dig a little deeper and see the real truth of the situation. Pray that God show you a way to be a blessing to them.

You scroll through your wall on FB and see some one complaining yet again about the same thing. Take a deep breath. Say a prayer for this person that they can find a way to escape this struggle they are in. Pray that they find true joy.

Remember the simple rules we were taught when we were young:

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Turn the other cheek.

Be the kind of friend you’d want to have.

Take turns. The last shall be first and the first shall be last.

You reap what you sow.

All so simple yet so difficult at the same time. Just take a moment to try to see through the smoke and ask God to show you the truth. Be a light to others even when they are darkness….They are the ones that need it the most.

Buzz is the Word...Win a Buzzy!

As parents we all know that often times the best way for our kids to learn is through the experiences they have. But when you have a child with a chronic illness there are experiences that you wish you could protect them from….like injections and blood draws. While, unfortunately, these procedures are a necessity there are tools and tricks to try to help make them less traumatic for the child.

One tool that can be very helpful is the Buzzy. What is a Buzzy? As they explain on their site,
“Buzzy is an award-winning physiologic pain blocker. Using cold and vibration, Buzzy is proven to naturally block unpleasant sensations on contact.”

When we found out a year ago that Monkey was going to be starting Methotrexate via injection the first thing we did was purchase a Buzzy. Thankfully now he is able to take his medication orally but we’ve held on to Buzzy just incase we might need it again in the future.

Interested in getting a Buzzy of you own? Kim over at Living with Juvenile Arthritis is currently hosting a giveaway to win a Buzzy! Entry is easy but limited to US residents only. Simply click below to fill out your entry for a chance to win a Buzzy of your own.

Murky Waters

I know my blog has been very neglected the past couple of months. In December it was easy to blame it on the holidays but now there’s not such an easy out. I wish I could pin point what it is but I’m really not sure. I posted this my Facebook page this morning…

I seriously feel like my creative self is stuck in mucky mud with swirling murky water all around. I keep grabbing for ideas but they just slip away.

I feel like there is so much swirling inside my head but yet I cannot hold onto one thought or idea long enough to compose a post. Maybe it’s because there are things that I’m not sure I understand. Maybe it’s because it’s just not time to share those things. Maybe it’s because my brain is telling me I need a break. Honestly I don’t know. I do know I don’t want to take a break from blogging. I love it. It’s a wonderful outlet for me. It’s like free therapy. I hope you all will bear with me while I work through these murky waters and wait for the mud to settle. xo

All is quiet on the blogging front….

I can’t believe it’s been FOURTEEN days since I last posted. Oye. I guess that NaBloPoMo really drained my writing juices more than I realized. I’ve had quite a few posts running through my head but just haven’t gotten them through the fingers and onto the keyboard. I’ve also been soaking up all the laziness that the holidays tend to bring. The time to just sit around all day and watch the boys play with their new stuff. Time to take long afternoon naps just because. Time to sip more cups off coffee than I should probably drink. You know…down time.

I do have a lot I’d like to accomplish this year with my blog as well as goals for myself personally. I’m not very good at sticking to my goals or resolutions though so this year I decided to follow the “one word” trend and pick one word that I’d like to achieve in 2014. I chose this word because I can apply it to all aspects of my life and hopefully if I’m able to do so successfully it will teach the boys as well.
Why focus? Well, I tend to be a little bit scatter brained and it always bubbles over around me. Projects half finished or not even started, goals not reached, blog neglected (lol), etc.
What would your one word be or did you make goals/resolutions for 2014?
